Union Public Service Commission organizes the Civil Services Examination, which is one of the biggest competitive examinations in India and large number of candidates participate in it. The exam is conducted for the recruitment of talented and dynamic applicants in different departments of Government of India.

The CSE is done in three stages: Preliminary examination, Main examination and Personality Test (Interview). The Preliminary examination is also known as CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). Aspirants, only after qualifying the CSAT can be eligible for Main Examination of Civil Services Examination.

Syllabus for Preliminary examination:

The Preliminary examination consists of two papers of 200 marks:

  • Paper-I
  • Paper-II
Syllabus of paper-I Syllabus of paper-II
Current events of national and international importance Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
History of India and Indian National Movement Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Indian and World geography Decision making and problem solving
Economics and Social Development General  mental ability
Sectors initiatives etc Basic numeracy, Data Interpretation
Development, poverty, inclusion, demographics. English language comprehension skills

Syllabus for Mains Examination

  • Paper – I: One Indian Language
  • Paper – II: English
  • Paper – III: Essay
  • Paper – IV & V: General Studies.
  • Paper – VI, VII, VIII & IX: Two subjects from the following list of optional subjects.

Paper-I One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the 18 languages included in the VIIIth Schedule to the Constitution (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
Paper-II English (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
Paper-III Essay 200 Marks
Papers IV & V General Studies (300 Marks for each paper) 600 Marks
Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX Any two subjects (each having 2 papers) to be selected from the prescribed optional subjects (300 marks for each paper) 1200 Marks
